This is an incredible post. Thank you for teaching me so much! I always thought vaginal atrophy means my vag is going to become deformed at some point and I'm just going to have to accept it. Pretty ignorant in this department, and I'm okay admitting that. I'm so grateful for your newsletter.
I’m so glad it’s helpful. Oestrogen cream is the best!! New Zealand now has no more oestrogen patches which is disastrous. If you can get HRT and you need it, then do 😊
What shocked me about atrophy was how suddenly it seemed to happen. I'd been on HRT for 5 years and thought I'd got away with it, then one day there it was. So painful 😭
I noped straight to my GP and demanded vaginal estrogen RIGHT NOW. That stuff is amazing. I can't imagine what life must have been like for women before it was invented.
Wow, it’s interesting that you had an acute episode of atrophy. So glad you knew what was needed and treatment worked quickly for you :)
Mine was chronic, the skin split occurred years ago and I just couldn’t figure it out and didn’t have the capacity to deal with it. In the end I sent photos to my HRT female GP who I consult with remotely, and she sent the prescription through for Ovestin cream. Amazing stuff!
I’m so glad you’re feeling less alone, that’s always such a frightening feeling.
I’ve just finished reading ‘A Perfect Storm’ by some incredible academic researchers - it’s a research paper rather than a book! 🤓
Their conclusion reads: “A key takeaway is the importance of person-centred, autism-informed healthcare that considers intersectionality and accessibility needs. We encourage healthcare professionals to recognise autistic communication styles and the various symptoms of menopause, including those that are less widely discussed, and to be receptive to the fact that menopause may start earlier than is commonly expected.”
Please know it isn’t just you. We autistics just don’t yet have a platform or network to share our unified experience. This is why I set up my Substack. I really want us all to know that none of us our alone, that it’s not fair, and we need allies to forge a way forward for the sake of our collective safety.
